CULT VALUES st

Mastering Cult Values “s/t” on Sabotage Records and Static Age Records (Europe) and Deranged Records (North America).

Recorded and mixed by Tobias Lil.

“Cult Values was formed in October 2014 in Berlin as an international collaboration between people from the USA, New Zealand, Austria and Germany. After recording a much acclaimed demo in 2015 (out on Berlin’s own Static Age Rec.) and a line up change on drums right after, CV started playing tons of shows in Germany and the periphery as well as writing songs for an LP. Said record was finally recorded in December 2015 by Tobias Lill. Musically, there is something very early American hardcore meets moody punk about their sound, defined by fast, melodic, and confident guitar play reminiscent of Articles of Faith and more recently Criminal Code. Cult Values deliver 10 tracks of potent dark hardcore that will surely leave those hungry for a solid contemporary take on a classic sound quite satisfied.”

Youth Avoiders

Mastering Youth Avoiders “Spare Parts E.P.” on Build Me A Bomb Records, Destructure Records, and Deranged Records.

Taken from Razorcake: “These French punkers lay waste to everything within ten miles of this 45 with four tracks of fist-pumping hardcore that’s just dripping with hooks and a sound that is aggressive without being ham-fisted or meatheaded about it. Driving, catchy, scrappy, this’ll do all right by ye, homes. –Jimmy Alvarado”

Cretins

Mastering Cretins “Meat” on Deranged Records.

“CRETINS rear their ugly heads yet again with six new cuts of destructive hardcore punk on “Meat”. This is a completely savage recording that harnesses the pure hatred of Poison Idea and depraved genius of Cleveland’s finest into one crushing EP. This is not the safe, easygoing, or experimental garbage that has crept into HC punk in recent years. CRETINS’ approach here is simple – hard hitting and forceful songwriting with lyrics that espouse a clear distaste for humanity. Executed much faster and tighter than previous material, if there’s one CRETINS release to end it all to, “Meat” surely wins out.”

Daylight Robbery.jpg

Mastering Daylight Robbery “Accumulated Error” on Deranged Records.

“Daylight Robbery makes expansive sound for tight spaces. This Chicago trio of DIY scene anchors delivers anxious post-punk for those who came to throw their bodies on the gears and those who came to dance (categories that clearly overlap).

David and Christine Wolf are a forever-shifting point / counterpoint to one another, both in their melodic guitar and bass interplay and their big harmonies and vocal trade-offs, and Jeff Rice’s propulsive drumming provides a solid foundation on which to build song structures that shift, collapse and grow organically. One may hear echoes of the late ’70s and early ’80s in what they do, but their restlessness is very much of the now, the sound of the endless post-industrial search for stability rather than the sound of the late Cold War.”

Red Dons DHoT

Mixing the Red Dons “Dead Hand of Tradition” LP on Taken By Surprise and Deranged Records.

“Five years after their seminal “Fake Meets Failure” LP, Red Dons return with their junior album “The Dead Hand of Tradition,” set to be released August 10th on  Taken By Surprise Records in Europe and later this summer by Deranged Records in North America.

A lot has happened in those five years.

Two of the band’s core members Douglas Burns and Hajji Husayn left their hometown Portland, Oregon behind, for Chicago and London. They recorded and released a slew of singles on labels like Grave Mistake and Dirtnap (including a collaboration with TV Smith of UK punk legends The Adverts). Despite the distance between them, they’ve managed to tour regularly in North America and Europe.

In January this year they reconvened in Portland to record “The Dead Hand of Tradition” at Buzz Or Howl Studios, the same establishment where they recorded the album’s predecessor. “The Dead Hand of Tradition” features ten new tracks of their signature dark, driving, melodic punk rock sound. The formula of their distinctive songwriting hasn’t changed, but has matured as a result of having five more nomadic years under their belts. These new experiences have only added to the themes of alienation, emigration, and loss present in their music.

With Red Dons stalwart Richard Joachim on drums and recent recruit Ruby Sparks of The Stops (Dirt Cult Records / Sabotage Records) on guitar, the band just finished a Midwest / Canadian tour including an appearance at the Ottawa Explosion Fest last month and is returning to Europe for five weeks in the fall.

Criminal Code

Mastering Criminal Code “Salvage” EP on Erste Theke Tonträger and Cut The Cord That…Records.

“In my opinion, Criminal Code need no introduction. If you are not familiar so far, let Daniel Vandenberg explain this band for you! Criminal Code from Tacoma, Washington, play an anthemic, sneakingly melodic mixture of post-punk and cacophony of raw wavy punk. Formed in 2011, they’ve just released several 7“s and their debut LP No Device on Deranged Records, a welcome shot in the vein (or kick in the teeth) to an increasingly ethereal genre. They took their Husker Du/Greg Sage influences and made it their own unique sound. The new 7“ harkens back to the raw, stripped down and primal intensity that characterised the early days of post punk, back when it was still considered just punk, only punk that was a little off and slightly more unsettling than usual. Criminal Code straight rip and rock with an urgency and rabid junkieunpredictability that was traded in long ago when post punk started investing wholeheartedly in synthesisers and chorus pedal collections and diverting down broodier pathways to goth and whatever-wave. Criminal Code are a perfect mess of contradictions, simultaneously full-bodied and forceful, and cold, distant and washed-out, like a hardcore heart in pale post punk skin, or vice versa. While specifically for Criminal Code’s European tour, the EP neatly coheres and expands on their Husker Du Over A Cliff guitars and post-post (post) Wipers despair/rage. Snag the EP on tour and dig hard!”

4.-TV-Smith-Solo

Red Dons have collaborated on a song with punk legend TV Smith, mixed and mastered here.

The former ADVERTS front man wrote lyrics and sings over music we recorded in a Swedish bomb shelter in 2011. The song is titled A Vote for the Unknown. It will be available on vinyl this Fall thanks to Deranged Records and Taken By Surprised Records. Here is a link to the song.
