Street Eaters - The Envoy

Mastering Street Eaters “The Envoy” on Nervous Intent.

Released May 12, 2017

“THE ENVOY is a concept album based on famed dystopian, gender revolutionary, anti-authoritarian author Ursula K. Le Guin’s books “The Dispossessed” and “Left Hand of Darkness”. Cover art by Miriam Klein Stahl (illustrator of “Rad American Women A-Z” and “Rad Women Worldwide”).

STREET EATERS are a truewave/punk band from Berkeley+Oakland, CA that has drawn a range of sonic comparisons to bands from Wipers to Masshysteri, Autoclave to Mission of Burma, Huggy Bear to KARP, Sonic Youth’s ‘Bad Moon Rising’ to the early recordings of Warsaw. After years of relentless international touring on the heels of their well-received album “Blood::Muscles::Bones” (released on Nervous Intent in the U.S./Contraszt! in Europe), Megan March and John No (joined as of Summer 2018 by guitarist Stevo) returned home to troubled times in their immediate bay area underground punk community/family and the world at large. True to form, the band sought to come to terms with this changed landscape by diving deeply into their own recording studio to create a new record with an expansive new vision with “The Envoy”. Directly inspired by Le Guin’s radical speculative fiction and analytical lens on the world around us and beyond it, Street Eaters tackle transformative and transgressive lyrical themes of oppression, resistance, and change explored in the books.”

“On The Envoy, the followup to 2014’s Blood::Muscles::Bones, [Street Eaters] conjure entire worlds. March and No thread the underwater yawp of sea lions, the grind of collapsing glaciers, and whistling oscillations of planets through their already noisy soundscape. Feedback whips and howls, while a wildly overdriven bass leads the way deeper into the darkness.”  Taken from Flood Magazine

Colonised s:t

Mastering Colonised “s/t”.

Recorded & mixed by Paul Champion at Twin Earth Studios.

From Adelaide, Australia.

“Experience in South Australia’s Aboriginal communities, the death of a parent, and post-traumatic stress disorder are a few of the issues feeding into the emotional hellstorm that is their debut six-song demo, the sound of which is in the mould of those post-punk bands that rocked hard while pounding the clay into some different shapes – like Wipers, Husker Du, Killing Joke, Mission of Burma, feedtime, Midnight Oil!”

Steel Chains s:t

Mastering Steel Chains “s/t” on Dirt Cult Records.

“The debut 7″ from one of my current favorite PDX punk bands, Steel Chains. The band plays ridiculously great emotive and melodic minor chord punk for fans of The Wipers, Daylight Robbery, The Stops, etc. Members have also spent time in bands such as The Observers, Clorox Girls, Drunken Boat, Defect Defect, PRF and more. Holy super group!”

Warsong Control

Mastering Warsong “Control” on Sabotage, Dirt Cult, and Too Circle Records.

“After leaving their mark on three continents, Zaragoza, Spain’s WARSONG are traversing previously uncharted territory with their first release sung entirely in Spanish. This different way of expressing themselves opens onto a free street making new things possible. I honestly don’t know how this band keeps cranking out so many bangers, but their latest record packs 8 more gripping tracks both recognizably WARSONG and significantly evolved from their previous releases. Their most complexly rich record to date, “Control” is an arresting soundtrack for dark times. Those who have been following this band for a while will also notice less distortion, longer and more elaborated song structures, and an unexpected treat on “Dejando Atrás” featuring guest female vocals from the singer of ACCIDENTE. I’d be hard pressed to find a current comparison because WARSONG has few musical contemporaries- they are truly carving out their own path. I hear the convergence of diverse elements such as THE ONLY ONES, early NEW ORDER, the WIPERS, SONIC YOUTH, and THE RAMONES blended up and spewed out against the neoliberal end times.”

Deep Heat

Mastering  Deep Heat “Still Life” on Poison City Records.

“Deep Heat never drop below 160 beats per minutes and deliver a polished set of rapid-fire post-punk that’s bursting with energy and so fucking righteous.” – Beat Magazine
Following the release of their 2013 10″/EP ‘New Design’ and Split 7″ with White Walls, Deep Heat members have been busying themselves with a variety of other projects; guitarist/ vocalist Gus Lord with the Stevens, Tyrannamen and Twerps while guitarist Alicia Saye and Jacquie Hynes also play in the dark-post-punk band Infinite Void.

Earlier this year Deep Heat headed back into the studio with Mat Robins at Coloursound (mixed by Steven Smith), emerging with a debut album that perfectly melds elements of 80’s UK post-punk, buzzy garage-punk and angsty Midwest rock. “I joke that Still Life sounds like a dry 70s pop record to me with some wanderings into 80s post punk and 90s lo fi indie rock. It’s more melodic but varied more in terms of pace and texture. Gusto (guitar/vocals) tracked lots of nice acoustic overdubs too. I’m really proud of this record and I feel positive and excited about its upcoming release and touring it” bassist Jacquie Hynes told Noisey/ VICE.

Miscalculations

Mastering Miscalculations “Kill the Whole Cast” on FDH RecordsP.Trash Records, and Rockstar Records.

“CAPITAN MARCO of the London-based punk rock fleet No Front Teeth Records is an unweary demonio for the good punk work and he was the singer of the recently deceased GAGGERS and played in a helluva other bands. He quickly calculated his remaining super-powers: writer of excellent punk poetry + wizard of super catchy melodies = MISCALCULATIONS. That’s simple math. Bam! New band going. Together with drummer SHAUN he already wrote and pounded out two LPs on Dead Beat and Rockstar Rec. and now kills everything with this third LP. Though the Miscalculations know how to add 7+7, and Marco’s gritty and snotty voice screams ’punk singer’ with every syllable he spits out, Miscalculations definitely advanced the punk sound (some may call it Post-Punk). The 12 songs on ’Kill the whole cast’ are a tasteful blend of the sound of Buzzcocks, Wire, The Statues and even some Mind Spiders with the catchy and sharp, yet laconic guitar work and the melancholic and demanding undertone of Wipers, Masshystery or The Vicious, plus some Electro-Synth-NoWave-Punk of The Units or even The Spits. Always intense, always poetic with outstanding cryptic yrics and wrapped up in cool imagery. When this album has passed they killed the whole cast / You will be obsessed when they killed the whole cast!”

Blank Pages

Mastering Blank Pages “No Reception” on Dirtcult and Hardware Records.

Recorded and mixed by Evan Maus in Portland at Red Lantern Studios.

“Blank Pages are from Berlin, Germany and play dark melodic punk that sounds a bit like The Marked Men covering the Wipers. This single includes two killer songs recording in Portland, OR while embarking on their first (and, sadly, last) US tour, that are the perfect follow up to a their self-titled LP we released last year.  The band just completed a European tour and announced that they are breaking up. Members of Modern Pets and Life Fucker.”

Criminal Code

Mastering Criminal Code “Salvage” EP on Erste Theke Tonträger and Cut The Cord That…Records.

“In my opinion, Criminal Code need no introduction. If you are not familiar so far, let Daniel Vandenberg explain this band for you! Criminal Code from Tacoma, Washington, play an anthemic, sneakingly melodic mixture of post-punk and cacophony of raw wavy punk. Formed in 2011, they’ve just released several 7“s and their debut LP No Device on Deranged Records, a welcome shot in the vein (or kick in the teeth) to an increasingly ethereal genre. They took their Husker Du/Greg Sage influences and made it their own unique sound. The new 7“ harkens back to the raw, stripped down and primal intensity that characterised the early days of post punk, back when it was still considered just punk, only punk that was a little off and slightly more unsettling than usual. Criminal Code straight rip and rock with an urgency and rabid junkieunpredictability that was traded in long ago when post punk started investing wholeheartedly in synthesisers and chorus pedal collections and diverting down broodier pathways to goth and whatever-wave. Criminal Code are a perfect mess of contradictions, simultaneously full-bodied and forceful, and cold, distant and washed-out, like a hardcore heart in pale post punk skin, or vice versa. While specifically for Criminal Code’s European tour, the EP neatly coheres and expands on their Husker Du Over A Cliff guitars and post-post (post) Wipers despair/rage. Snag the EP on tour and dig hard!”
